"Kidnapped"

  • Homeless (making eye contact): Hi, may I kidnap you for the afternoon.
  • I say (not hesitant at all) : Yes… with the condition that I can write about it later.
  • Homeless: Okay.
  • I say: So, where are we going?
  • He stands his left arm towards me, I grab him by the arm and we walk together. He proceeds to tell me his story. His story about the end of a lifetime and the beginning of another. He tells me we are living in multiple universes and that we are granted multiple lifetimes. He thinks we don’t make good use of them. He also tells me he’s never been in love and that he’s trying to figure out what it is so special about love. He says that the fundamental force that moves him is when he sees completion.
  • Homeless: Can I take you out for lunch now?
  • I say: Sure, where would you like to go?
  • Homeless (looking at his cash): I don’t have enough for both of us, but I’ll buy you lunch.
  • I say: Okay.
  • Homeless (2nd eye contact): There’s a taco stand around the corner.
  • He takes me there. He buys me a taco and a coke. I ask for a straw. He brings me a straw. I ask for napkins. He brings me napkins. I sit. He sits. I begin to look at him slowly. He looks away and proud of this foreign acceptance. He asks:
  • Have you ever been in love?
  • I say: plenty.
  • Homeless: Yeah? How does it feel?
  • I say: Feels like life worth living.
  • Homeless: How?
  • I say: See that taco stand? It doesn’t stand on its own. It needs something. It needs someone. It needs food and care and signs and money. Love is all of that. Love is something we make for ourselves or something we make for others.
  • Homeless: Are you in love now?
  • I say: Always.
  • He is called for my taco. He walks back with a carnitas taco and a coke.
  • He makes his 3rd eye contact with me.
  • I say: want some?
  • Homeless: No. It’s for you.
  • I say: I can share.
  • Homeless: No. It’s for you.
  • I eat slowly and sip my Mexican coke. He stares. I stare. We are silent for what it feels like eternity.
  • Homeless: Are you in love with me yet?
  • I say: Yes.
  • Homeless: Are you? (laughs)
  • I say: Yes.
  • He stands up, grabs my right hand and kisses it.
  • Homeless: I will go now.
  • I say: But you kidnapped me for an afternoon!
  • Homeless: It has been an afternoon.
  • I say: Why?
  • Homeless: Why what?
  • I say: Why have you never been in love?
  • Homeless: Because I never asked someone out before.
  • He walks away.
  • I watch him walk away. He doesn’t even look back.
